Kane Gulch

BEARS EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT

After a week of fascinating ruins spotting in Bears Ears, I wanted to do a bigger hike to get a bit of a workout in.

I decided to check out the Kane Gulch trail in Bears Ears National Monument. I did just 5 miles out, for a 9.91 mile roundtrip with a 785' elevation gain.

The trail started out easy, literally following cow paths through the brush in a flat pasture, through a gate you need to be careful to close behind you, and then down into a canyon full of boulders and flanked by cliffs with tiger-striped canyon pour overs.

There were some ruins, but they were way up in the cliffs and impossible to take a picture of. Besides, you've seen plenty of ruins photos by now. There was also an arch at the point where I turned around. But it was small and you've seen plenty of arch photos by now as well. :)

But don't worry - we haven't run out of fun and interesting things to see yet! Behold, the boulders!

Here's a selfie with an ENORMOUS boulder. There's something wrong when I'm in the picture for perspective and make the boulder look small, lol. You'll have to trust me when I tell you this thing is at least 15' high.

And here is a little boulder humor I wish I could take credit for. Check on this huge rock in the photo below and notice how it looks like it could tip to the right at any moment. Except for those two little walking sticks propping it up. LOL!

Here's a closer view of those sticks. How funny is the person who did this?!

And now, check out THIS boulder. For sure, this one looks like it could use some walking sticks to prop it up!

A closer view ...
