NORTHWEST UTAH
The Bonneville Salt Flats are located 1.5 hours west of Salt Lake City. It is a flat 12 mile by 5 mile area covered in a salt crust, ranging from a few inches to five feet thick.
Most people have heard of the Bonneville Land Speed Racing where fanatics of fast cars meet annually to race cars and set land speed records. Others may just think Pontiac Bonneville.
For a place that attracts visitors from around the world, Karen and I found exactly ZERO signs telling you where the salt flats are located. We were driving and google said we arrived, but we were in the middle of the interstate with no exit nearby. We thought, oh, it must be the next exit.
It was not.
We U-turned. A few miles down, google once again told us we had arrived. We pulled into the rest stop on the south side of the interstate. A guy there said the flats were on the north side, you just drive over there.
"Just drive over there" meant illegally crossing the median of the interstate (instead of driving 40 miles roundtrip to the next exit to come back), pulling into the rest stop on the north side of the road, and just driving off the pavement onto the flats.
Here's a picture of what that "entrance" looked like on the way back. Remember, ZERO signs.
The salt stuck to the tires and inside the fenders. And it is still all over the floor mats in my car.
The sun decided to pop out for a minute to knock out this slick looking photo.
The reason I wanted to hit the Bonneville Salt Flats is because I heard you can really play around with perspective. Because there is nothing between you and the horizon, there is nothing to provide perspective and you can take some pretty creative shots. Karen and I were limited with what we had since we had done zero preparation, but we got some fun shots. :)
I'll give you a gold star if you can correctly guess the approximate distance we stood apart to take these pictures. :)
